THE MAN BEHIND 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Meet Bill McGowan

Bill McGowan has spent over five decades building, scaling, and selling businesses across multiple industries. From starting out in the early 1970s to founding Fastway Couriers in 1983, his work has shaped one of the most recognised franchise systems in Australia and New Zealand.
What defines his perspective isn’t just what he built. It’s what it took to build it. The risks. The setbacks. The decisions that don’t come with clear answers. The parts of business that don’t show up in theory.
Over time, Bill began to notice the same pattern again and again. People stepping into business without fully understanding what it actually takes. Drawn in by the upside, but unprepared for the reality behind it.
That’s what led him to write Be Your Own Boss. Not as a motivational idea, but as a practical guide built from real experience. Something straightforward. Something honest. Something that helps people think clearly before they commit.
His approach has always been the same. No hype. No unnecessary complexity. Just clear thinking shaped by decades of doing the work and seeing what actually holds up over time.
Today, Bill focuses on sharing what he’s learned, helping others understand business more clearly and make better decisions about what they’re building. That’s what led to Be Your Own Boss — a practical guide built from decades of real experience, designed to help people think clearly before they commit.
Where It Started
Bill’s journey didn’t start with a big plan. It started with a simple idea. At just 13 years old, he began a lawn mowing business. No systems. No blueprint. Just figuring things out as he went. By 18, he had built it up and sold it.
That early experience shaped everything that followed. Not through theory, but through doing. Testing. Learning. Adjusting.
Years later, that same mindset led him into the transport industry, where he went on to found Fastway Couriers in 1983. What began as a single operation grew into one of the most recognised franchise systems across Australia and New Zealand. But even with that level of success, the process never changed.
Every stage came with uncertainty. Every decision carried risk. And every step forward was earned through experience, not assumption.
